MY MISSION

Like most people, you worry that your finances are not in harmony with your life goals.  You are looking for objective advice but find yourself overwhelmed with information and frustrated by conflicting advice.   

While managing investments is an important and integral part of the Financial Planning process, it is more important to understand your concerns, goals, and aspirations so that your investments are in harmony with them.  Therefore, investment planning cannot be done properly until I fully understand you, your family, and your unique situation.

My mission is to bring harmony into your financial life in a comprehensive and holistic manner through a process called Financial Life Planning.

WHAT IS FINANCIAL LIFE PLANNING®?

Financial Life Planning is a holistic process that puts your interests first and focuses on increasing your sense of financial well-being and life satisfaction. 

Initially, this process will help you to clarify your values, priorities, circumstances, and aspirations; and then guide you in defining and designing your unique version of the “rich life.”  In addition, Financial Life Planning will increase your understanding of the habits and attitudes that will facilitate your financial and life goals and support successful life transitions.

The core of my practice are professional families, have college bound children, and are within 15 to 20  years to their target retirement date.  They desire  an on-going, long term financial planning relationship.  They also value and need objective, fee-only advice.  My clients want a relationship with a trusted advisor who will guide and assist them in reaching their goals in an organized, comprehensive and holistic manner.

Hi, I’m Paul.  I am the founder of Attune Financial Planning.  I provide comprehensive, holistic financial planning to individuals and families.  

Why Am I a Financial Planner?

I established my own firm because I value the independence and the freedom to do what is best for you and without any conflict of interests. I truly care about you and I am passionate about guiding you towards the life you want for yourself and your family.

I started my career in Corporate Finance where I worked for over 15 years.  I became interested in Financial Planning in 2003 right after my son was born.   My wife and I were searching for someone to help us develop and implement our financial plan.  What we found instead were primarily financial sales people. Not knowing where to turn to, I decided to learn about financial planning on my own.  I took classes at Golden Gate University where I eventually received a Graduate Certificate in Financial Planning.

Surprisingly, I discovered a new career where I could truly help everyday working people who have very real concerns about how to protect their family, buy a home, save for retirement and fund their children’s college education.

In 2012, after successfully passing the CFP® exam and the State Registered Investment Advisor exam, I established my own independent financial planning practice.

Education

I have a Master’s of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.  I also have a Graduate Certificate in Financial Planning, and hold a Series 65 Registered Investment Advisor License.  

Family & Personal Life

I live in the Terra Linda area of San Rafael, California with my wife and teenage son. In my spare time I enjoy gathering with family and friends, going on family vacations, watching movies, reading, and running.  I’ve run a number of full marathons, and my wife and I enjoy training and running half marathons together.

I want to ensure we are a good match to work together.   I seek to work with clients who see the value of a continuous long-term engagement and are committed to working with me in a collaborative manner.

Attunement Basics Program

A relationship with Attune Financial Planning typically begins with the Attunement Basics Program.  The purpose of this limited engagement is to allow us get to know each other, to determine if a mutual on-going financial planning relationship is warranted, and  to gain insight into the nature of my services.

We will have one 2 hour meeting where you will be provided the following:  an analysis of your investment portfolio plus a discussion of your most pressing financial planning concerns.  Typical topics that are covered are in this meeting are:

1.  Retirement feasibility
2.  Social Security Benefits Analysis
3.  Medicare Options analysis
4.  College Affordability Analysis

The Cost for this program typically ranges between $750 to $1,000. (This cost also includes preparation and analysis time)

If we mutually agree to move forward to a long-term financial planning relationship, the cost of the Attunement Basics Program will be applied to the Attune Partnership Program.

Part I:  Gaining Attunement

The goal of Part I is to develop and present your Initial Financial Plan that is designed to provide you with the important steps you will need to take to successfully implement your Plan.  Through this process I also help you develop a more harmonious relationship between your finances and the things and people that matter to you most like funding your children's college education and saving for retirement.  By the end of this 5-step process, my hope is that you will have gained clarity regarding your values, current financial life, and future goals.  

Here are the key steps you can expect to go through:

1.  Financial Life Planning Discussions ( 2 meetings) – The purpose is to help you understand where you are now, the journey that has brought you to this point in time, and your goals for the future.

2.  In-depth data gathering - I will ask that you provide me with your bank and brokerage account statements, recent tax returns, retirement plans, social security statements, etc.  

3.  I will then analyze the data you provided me, ask follow up questions, and prepare your Initial Financial Plan.

4.  Presentation of Initial Financial Plan  - I will summarize and clarify your values, priorities, concerns, expected life transitions, goals and objectives.  You will receive recommendations  on how to best reach your life goals and how I will help you manage your investments in support of your goals.  

5.  Once the plan is presented we will move into Part II of the Program - Implementation and on-going monitoring of your Financial Plan.

Part II:  Maintaining Attunement

Upon the completion of your Initial Financial Plan, we will work together to ensure there continues to be a harmonious relationship between your goals and investments.  I will act as your guide, monitor your progress, and help you to maintain focus on your personal and financial goals.  Because unanticipated events occur and priorities shift over time, we will meet regularly to review your Financial Life Plan to make sure it remains relevant to your life journey.

During the first 12 months we will meet  as often as necessary by phone, email or in person to ensure your Initial Financial Plan have been implemented successfully.

 In the on-going years we can expect to have 2 to 4 in-person or virtual meetings together annually to discuss your Plan and make changes or adjustments as necessary.  I will continuously monitor your progress and react to any changes to your personal circumstances that warrant a change in strategy.

There are two major components to Maintaining Attunement:

1.  Comprehensive Financial Planning - you can expect to receive:

  • Continuing Advice, as delivered by your Initial Financial Plan
  • Full implementation of your Initial Financial Plan's action items
  • Regular progress meetings to review your situation, adjust your Plan and to provide mutual  accountability
  • Planning and coordination in all areas that affect your life (See  Planning Tab)
  • Professional guidance with your outside investments (401K, 403B, Pensions, stock options, etc.) so that they are coordinated with your overall investment strategy and  long term goals
  • Access to your exclusive financial planning tools (See  Client Tools Tab)
  • Coordination with other Professionals like your Accountant, Attorney, Realtor, etc.

2.  Investment Management Support - you can expect to receive:

  • Assistance in creating, implementing, and adjusting your investment strategy that is in alignment with your Initial Financial Plan and long term objectives.
  • Assistance with account transfers and consolidations
  • Advisory Fees debited directly from your accounts at TD Ameritrade
  • Implementation with the use of low cost Vanguard and Dimensional Funds
  • Regular investment reporting including Monthly custodial statements, quarterly performance Reports,  and Quarterly Net Worth Reports

The entire process is designed to reflect my belief that effective financial planning is a continuing process of engagement, not a one-time event.

ATTUNEMENT BASICS 

The Cost for this program typically ranges between $750 to $1,000. (This cost also includes preparation and analysis time)

If we mutually agree to move forward to a long-term financial planning relationship, the cost of the Attunement Basics Program will be applied to the Attune Partnership Program.


ATTUNE PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM

The annual fee is composed of two elements:  An annual fixed fee and Assets Under Management (AUM).

1.  Annual Fixed Financial Planning Fee*:

Initial Year$3,500  to $7,500  depends on complexity and level of AUM Balance
On-Going Years Starts at $2,500 -   depends on complexity and level of AUM balance


 2.   Assets Under Management (AUM),  defined as your retirement and non-retirement accounts invested with my custodian, TD Ameritrade.  After the Initial Year, there is a minimum annual AUM fee of $1,500.

Stock Options and Equity Awards

Equity awards are a great benefit and can provide additional sources of income. However, they can be difficult to to understand and manage.  I help manage your non-qualified stock options (NSOs), incentive stock options (ISOs), restricted stock units (RSUs), stock appreciation rights (SARs), employee stock purchase plans (ESPP) in order to maximize your income and minimize the tax impact.


Estate Planning

Estate planning is more than making a Will or Trust. It involves deciding who will be a guardian for minor children or making provisions for special needs situations. In addition, estate planning involves power of attorneys, medical directives, end-of-life considerations, and bequests to charities.

Insurance Planning

Real Estate Planning

Your home is probably your single largest investment and your mortgage your single largest debt. The housing bubble showed everyone how easy it is to get a big house with a big mortgage and end up with a very big problem. I advise on getting the right-size home for your income and the right-size mortgage to fit your cash flow. I will also review your mortgage to see if refinancing might lower your monthly payment.


Education Planning

Saving for college is a significant financial planning issue for most families. Median family income has not increased nearly enough to keep pace with rising college costs. While there are numerous sources of funding available, identifying the right mix of alternatives and maximizing their use is a complex and confusing process. The good news is that there are ways for families of any income level to effectively save for future college costs. I can help you determine the best education planning strategy for you and your family.

Investing Philosophy

I believe that Markets are efficient and that in the long-run it is difficult to consistently do better than the overall Market.  This approach is based on the work of Nobel Prize winning economists whose studies have proven that the how your investments are allocated (mix between stocks, bonds, and cash), are the most important determining factor in how well your investments will perform over the long-run.   In other words a well diversified portfolio is the key to long-term success.

Whenever possible, I will incorporate the use of low cost investments from Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) and Vanguard*.  The use of DFA funds are only available to DFA approved advisors.

 In a well-constructed portfolio, each investment should fulfill a specific function and be right for your personal situation. Before implementing any recommendations on your behalf, I will:

  • Thoroughly discuss your goals with you before making any recommendations
  • Look at the financial risks you are already taking before determining your appropriate level of investment risk
  • Review all your accounts to determine an appropriate asset allocation and asset location (which investments should be in which accounts)
  • Recommend the real estate exposure you need to achieve long-term financial stability
  • Integrate tax planning with your investment strategy to produce a higher after-tax return

Tax Planning & Tax Preparation

I am mindful of taxes when creating and managing your investment portfolio. You may have taxable accounts, tax-deferred accounts such as IRAs and 401(k)s, and tax-free Roth IRA accounts. Your gain on your investments can be increased by the proper placement of various investments in these different account types.   My work with you also includes analyzing the tax ramifications when making decisions about  exercising and selling your company stock such as Restricted Stock Units, Stock Appreciation Rights, and Employee Stock Purchase Plans.

A key element of my ongoing review is projecting your current tax obligation, both in the first quarter and last quarter of the year.  I conduct an analysis of your  tax liability, and whenever possible, capitalize on opportunities to save you money via effective tax management.

Because I am an Enrolled Agent, I am qualified to file your annual Federal and State tax return*.  This is an added benefit to on-going clients.   The tax planning and tax preparation is highly coordinated which means greater predictability and accuracy of your annual tax obligation.

 *The fee for filing your annual tax return starts at $250.00.
